THE STAR AND STRIPES, Germany, May 8, 1945  This is the volume I, number 1 issue of the "Southern Germany Edition" as noted in the upper left corner of the masthead.
The ftpg. of this issue has a bold, three line head in 2 1/4 inch type taking more than half the ftpg: "ETO WAR ENDS" (see photos). The report begins about the historic surrender by Germany begins: "Unconditional surrender of all German forces was announced yesterday by the radio at Flensburg, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz, successor to Adolph Hitler as Fuehrer of Germany, ordered the surrender and the German high command declared it effective, the German announcement said..." , and more, the report concludes on the bkpg. where there is a banner head: "Surrender Ends War in ETO". Much more war-related content throughout the issue.
Four pgs., measures 18 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches, first leaf has a small hole at the fold juncture, some lite fold wear on the ftpg., fold creases, occasional foxing, otherwise in good condition & nice for display. Great to have this report about V-E Day in this famous title being the first issue of the Southern Germany Edition!
