May 26, 1945
THE STARS AND STRIPES, London edition, England, May 26, 1945 Self-described as "The Newspaper of U.S. Armed Forces in the European Theater of Operations".
Headings include: "B29's Hit Tokyo Business Area", British Ponder Himmler Burial", and "Japanese-Americans Fight to Become Part of a Nation". However, the key feature of this issue are the three images: "The Killer Rests", showing Heinrich Himmler lying at the British headquarters in Luneberg, after committing suicide, "Jap Played Possum", showing the first "Jap" captured (who played dead for 1 1/2 days) during the bloody struggle for Iwo Jima", and "Bing Crosby", looking as if he just walked off the set of "White Christmas", which shows him as he is about to leave for another overseas tour.
The issue is complete in 8 pages, has various edge tears, is evenly browned, and is very fragile. There are pencil markings above the masthead with the words "War Dept".
