THE WORLD, New York, February 6, 1921
* Original Yankee Stadium is born
* 'The House That Ruth Built' has a home
* Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees
This 50+ page newspaper has very historic significance concerning the old Yankee Stadium.
The front page has one column headlines:
* YANKS WILL BUILD NEW HOME CLOSE TO POLO GROUNDS
* Great Stadium, Biggest in the World, to Be on Astor Property in 161st Street
* STAND A TRIPLE DECKER AND WILL SEAT 75,000
* Site Purchased for $620,000 and Total Outlay Likely to Reach $2,300,000
Nice to have this 1st report on the front page.
Better yet inside on page 22 is a banner headline inside a black border box that reads: "New and Mammoth Home of Yankees will Be a Monument to Baseball" with subhead: "Yankees to Build Huge Stadium Not Far From the Polo Grounds"
Also a nice 4 column illustration of the projected stadium with caption: "How Baseball Home of Yankees Will Look When Built" plus a 3 column area map of the new site. (see)
A very important issue on the house that Ruth built especially being from a New York City newspaper.
The following page (pg.23) has a banner headline that reads: "Babe Ruth may Live to Learn That Weight, After All, Is a Great Leveller" with subheads that include: "Babe Ruth Trying to Get Rid of Fat, But Can't Stop Eating" with two related photos of Ruth.
Could this be a one of a kind issue ? What value can be placed on such an awesome find that reports the start of Yankee Stadium early in Babe Ruth's Yankee career. The starting price is just a guess. Good luck.
Other news of the day throughout. Light browning with minor margin wear, otherwise in good condition for this time period.
wikipedia notes: The original Yankee Stadium is a stadium located in The Bronx in New York City, New York. It served as the home baseball park of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees from 1923 to 1973 and after extensive renovations, from 1976 to 2008. Located at East 161st Street and River Avenue, the stadium has a capacity of 57,545 and hosted 6,581 Yankees regular season home games during its 85-year history. It was also the former home of the New York Giants football team, as well as the host of twenty of boxing's most famous fights and three Papal Masses. The stadium's nickname, "The House That Ruth Built" comes from the iconic Babe Ruth, the baseball superstar whose prime years coincided with the beginning of the Yankees' winning history.
Yankee Stadium is one of the most famous venues in the United States, having hosted a variety of events and many historic moments during its existence. Its primary occupants, the Yankees, have won far more World Series championships (26) than any other major league club and Yankee Stadium has hosted 37 World Series, far more than any other baseball stadium. The Stadium also hosted the major-league All-Star Game four times: 1939, 1960, 1977, and, as part of its curtain call, 2008.
In 2006, the Yankees began construction on a new $1.8 billion stadium in public parkland adjacent to the original Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will open their new home in 2009. Once the new stadium opens, most of the old stadium, including the above-ground structure, is to be demolished to become parkland.[1]
The first game at the stadium was held on April 18, 1923, with the Yankees beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1. The final game at the stadium was held on September 21, 2008, with the Yankees beating the Baltimore Orioles 7-3.
