Item # 551324

January 30, 1935

NEW YORK TIMES, Jan. 30, 1935 America refuses to join the World Court!. Ftpg. 3 line, 3 col. head: "Senate Beats World Court, 52-36, 7 Less Than 2/3 vote; Defeat For The President" & subheads: "Concessions Are Futile" "Direct Pressure From the White House Fails to Stem the Tide" & more.

Note: Although President Franklin Roosevelt urged Congress to ratify the World Court treaty and make the U.S. a member of the organization, the Senate rejected the proposal by a vote of 52-35. The Hearst newspapers and the radio addresses by Father Charles Coughlin kept the Irreconcilables on track and opposed to participation in international organizations. The issue is in excellent condition (rag paper) and is complete. (source: League of Nations Archives)
