April 14, 1764
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, April 14, 1764 The photo shows the first part of an act recently passed by Parliament, reading in part: "...granting Certain Duties in the British Colonies and Plantations in America, and for improving and securing the Trade between the same and Great Britain".
Known as the Sugar Act, it actually placed a duty on a variety of goods. In Parliament it was called the American Revenue Act, and its primary function was to raise money to help alleviate the debt from the French and Indian War, as well as to defray the expense in managing colonial territories as stated in the first paragraph with: "...for defraying the expences of defending and protecting, and securing the same."
The entire text of the act begins on an inside page and concludes on the next.
Wear on the front page causes a very small hole that affects the first and second leaf but not the mentioned text, otherwise good.
A significant and historic report, and great to have in this London newspaper.
