November 19, 1781

THE INDEPENDENT LEDGER & THE AMERICAN ADVERTISER, Boston, Massachusetts, Nov. 19, 1781
The masthead is decorative and patriotic, featuring an engraving beneath which are the descriptive words: "All Hands with One Inflamed, Enlightened Heart." (see)
This issue was published just a month after the surrender of Cornwallis to George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, essentially ending the Revolutionary War.
Almost one-third of page 2 is taken up with: "By the United States, in Congress Assembled. PROCLAMATION" which is signed in type by Thomas McKean as President, and Charles Thomson as Secretary. This proclamation is for declaring: "...the thirteenth day of December next to be religiously observed as a day of Thanksgiving and prayer, that all the people may assemble on that day, with grateful hearts to celebrate the praises  of our gracious Benefactor...to offer up our most fervent supplications to the God of all grace..." with much more. This day of thanksgiving was for acknowledging the success of the continental army in defeating the British and winning the Revolutionary War (see photos for the full text).
Almost a full column on the back page is taken up with the list of the killed and wounded among the French troops "...since the beginning of the siege of York from the 6th to the 7th October..." and further on are the details of: "...the killed & wounded of the American army from the 28th of September, 1781, the day of the investiture of York, to the storm of the enemy's redoubts on the night of the 14th of October..." being among the closing days of the battle at Yorktown which would end in Cornwallis' surrender on October 19 (see).
Complete in four pages, some light foxing, generally in very nice condition.
