April 15, 1912

THE EVENING TIMES, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, April 15, 1912
Most first reports of the Titanic disaster are dated April 16 as morning newspapers did not receive the news until too late for their April 15 printing deadline.
This is an evening newspaper of the 15th which falsely printed an optimistic report reading:
"GIANT STEAMSHIP TITANIC COLLIDES WITH ICEBERG: PASSENGERS SAFELY TRANSFERRED TO CARPATHIA"
But one of the subheads, while also being optimistic ends with an omminous comment:
"Although Badly Damaged, White Star Liner Is Reported to Be Making Her Way Towards Halifax Under Own Steam--Later Report Says She Is Sinking." "Largest Vessel In World"
Another ftpg. dispatch headed: "All Passengers Safe" reads: "The local offices of Horton Davidson, one of the Titanic passengers, has received the following wireless message: 'All passengers are safe and Titanic is taken in tow by the Virginian."
The front page also features a rather large photo captioned: "The Titanic, The Largest Steamship In The World".
An inside leaf (pgs. 7 & 8)  has an archival mend & an ad clipped from it, but fortunately all of the Titanic content is on the front page save for a carryover to pg. 9.
This newspaper is in uncommonly nice condition. Actually it is in excellent condition save for the noted problem with an unrelated inside leaf. There are no tears to speak of, the issue is not heavily browned nor pulpish, and it is in very clean condition.
A rare opportunity not only for an April 15th report with a banner headline--and Titanic photo--but in terrific condition.
