400th anniversary of Guatemala is celebrated...

Item # 544996

July 25, 1924

EL IMPARCIAL, Guatemala, July 25, 1924

* Guatemala newspaper celebrating 400 years of the founding of the country...
* Mesia is the first governor : Hernando Cortes...

See the photo for the terrific broadside-like front page, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Pedro de Alvarado y Mesia's founding of Guatemala, with a portrait of him.
Mesia was a professional soldier and companion of Cortes in 1519 as second in command in the conquest of the Aztecs. He led an expedition south from Mexico City into Guatemala in 1524, establishing the first Spanish settlement. He was made the first governor of Guatemala.

The interior pages would seem to give some of the history of Guatemala and the involvement of the Spanish Conquistadors, including Hernando Cortes.
This issue is complete in 16 pages, has a small hole near the middle of the front leaf just touching the collar of the Mesia portrait, otherwise is in very nice condition & not the least bit pulpish.
