THE SUSQUEHANNAH CENTINEL, Montrose, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, October 4, 1817
* Rare title
* Early 19th Montrose, Pennsylvania
This is a quite rare title of a newspaper which lasted for less than 2 1/2 years, and the very first newspaper in the small town of Montrose. Of particular interest is the very ornate & handsome masthead which features a nicely engraved heraldic eagle above which is a star-studded arch (see photo) with "Centinel" in large letters. News of the day includes: "Sea Serpent" "Colonization Of The Blacks" "The Chinese Empire" "Vermont Election" and more. Complete 4 page newspaper, never-trimmed margins, some light browning to the front page, generally in very nice condition. Measures about 12 by 19 1/2 inches. A very displayable--and uncommon--newspaper.
