THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
Georgia, Aug. 26, 1913 One of the more sensational trials of the
first half of the 20th century was that of Leo Frank, the supervisor of
the National Pencil Company. The Leo Frank trial was a national scandal
which exposed the double standard of Southern justice: one for whites
and one for minorities such as Frank, who was Jewish. Not only was
Frank hung by a lynch mob after his death sentence was commuted in
1915, but the Ku Klux Klan experienced a period of renewed growth for
years afterward due to the racist feelings brought on by the trial.
Of great significance is that this is an Atlanta newspaper, where the murder & the trial happened. And this report covers perhaps the most significant event of the two year ordeal, with a bold banner headline proclaiming: "FRANK CONVICTED, ASSERTS INNOCENCE", which includes a ftpg. photof of Leo M. Frank. There is much front page report on the verdict, including an article on how Frank & his wife were told the jury's decision. There is much additional reporting on the inside pages as well, including a page 3 photo headed: "Mary Phagan, the Victim" with an article: "Story of Mary Phagan's Death As Representatives of the State Outlined It to Frank's Jury". This is the first issue I have seen which includes a photo of Mary Phagan. You get the complete 16 page issue which is in very nice, clean condition.
