THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, Boston, Dec. 22, 1787 Pg. 2 article
is headed: "Extracts from An Essay on the Constitution Recommended by
the Federal Convention" and is a somewhat critical view of the proposed
Constitution (see photos). An historic pg. 3 report is headed:
"Federal Constitution" and reads:
"A
letter was received by the mail on Wednesday from Philadelphia to a
gentleman in this town which says, 'That the state of Delaware had
accepted the NEW CONSTITUTION FORMALLY and UNANIMOUSLY." This is followed by:
"The General Assembly of New Hampshire...appointed the Wed. of
Feb...for the meeting of the Convention of that State at Exeter. Nine
States have now called Conventions to ratify & adopt the federal
Constitution. The account received from Northampton that Pennsylvania
had ratified the federal Constitution is not authentick...the
Convention had it then under consideration, we are authorised to say
so." and this is followed by the "Delegates to State Convention" of Massachusetts. The bkpg. has a letter signed by
John Jay
in support of the Constitution. Complete in 4 pages, scattered foxing,
small piece from the bottom of the spine affects no text, one small
tape mend in a bottom margin.
