April 21, 1783

THE INDEPENDENT LEDGER & AMERICAN ADVERTISER, Boston, April 21, 1783  The masthead features a very nice, patriotic engraving which shows "All Hands With One Inflamed, Enlightened Heart", as is written below the engraving (see photo).
The entire front page contains the Addresses from the disgruntled Continental Officers over receiving but half pay and also pension promises for their service & sacrifices, with General Washington's lengthy  reply--in full--on page two and signed by him in type: Geo. Washington. In his letter Washington advises moderation and patience, and promises expeditious congressional action on the salary & pension demands of the soldiers. A week later Congress allots the officers a lump sum equalling five years' pay each, with this historic report found on the back page (see photos).
A lengthy document by Gen. Horatio Gates immediately follows Washington's letter, and the back page has a letter signed in type by Guy Carleton.
Great to find all three facets of this troubling end-of-war situation in a single newspaper: the grievances by the officers; Washington's reply; and the action by Congress to resolve the problem.
Complete in 4 pages and in excellent condition.
