January 02, 1753
PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE, Philadelphia, Jan. 2, 1753 Famous title printed by Benjamin Franklin, as indicated by the imprint at the bottom of the back page which lists him by name: "Printed by B. Franklin, Post-Master, and D. Hall, at the New-Printing-Office, near the Market.". Notable content includes a "Scheme Of a Lottery" for finishing the steeple to Christ Church in Philadelphia. There is also a report from the "North Branch of the Raritan" in New Jersey about the "cruel Murder" of a master committed by "one of his own Negroes". Page 2 ads: "To be Sold, A Likely Negroe girl, about fourteen years of age..." & "To be Sold, A Likely Negroe girl, about twelve years old...". Has a nice, ornate engraving in the masthead (upper inset). Front page has two small areas of foxing (visible in the upper inset), occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Very desirable with the Franklin imprint.
