June 21, 1863

NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE from New York, NY and dated June 21, 1863. This 8 page newspaper is in nice condition due to the use of cotton and rag paper during this very historic time in U.S. history. This issue is loaded with advertisements and Civil War reports throughout from the day it was first reported which includes the following headlines: "THE REBEL MOVEMENTS" "The Rebels in Heavy Force at Hagerstown and Williamsport, Md." "Considerable Bodies Moving Toward McConnellsburg and Bedford" "Very Latest From Harrisburg"" and much more. A nice piece of history from this famous newspaper.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: "Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant [US]; Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton [CS] Forces Engaged: Army of the Tennessee [US]; Army of Vicksburg [CS] Estimated Casualties: 19,233 total (US 10,142; CS 9,091) Description: In May and June of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grants armies converged on Vicksburg, investing the city and entrapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pembertons army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies. Result(s): Union victory" source: parknet
