NEW YORK HERALD, April 14, 1859 Page 7 has a report: "The Great Billiard Match at Detroit" which gives brief updates of the match starting with one from 2:30 a.m. showing Michael Phelan ahead. A dispatch from 4:45 a.m. shows John Seerieter in the lead with mention that the excitement is at fever heat. It closes with a dispatch from 5:30 a.m. stating: "The great billiard match is finished, resulting in victory to Phelan. He beats Seereiter by 96 points." This was the world championship with a purse of $15,000. Overlays to the edges of each leaf.
