THE CLAY BUGLE, Rochester, N.Y., October 12, 1844 An early, and very rare "campaign newspaper", created specifically to support the campaign of Henry Clay for President of the United States. In the days before other forms of media, newspapers were the only way for the citizenry to learn of the platforms of those running for public office. They were, but nature, short-lived newspapers. This is one such issue, and an unusual one featuring a bugle in the masthead. In the dateline is: "Our Cause Is Just--Our Union Perfect." At the top of the front page is a campaign ad, just beneath the flag, supporting Henry Clay for President.
