THE ALASKAN, Sitka, Alaska Territory, June 4, 1887
* Very rare Alaska Territorial issue
Rarely are newspapers from Alaska found from before the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 when interest grew dramatically. This newspaper pre-dates the gold rush by ten years.
The format of the newspaper is much like other newspapers of the day, being four pages of small folio size (measures 13 by 20 in.).
The front page has an interesting article about the Eskimos, titled: "From Kodiak" which begins:…
FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED, New York, Feb. 8, 1868 Perhaps the most notable prints are: "Fortifications at the Entrance to Sitka Harbor" and: "South View of New Archangel (Sitka) from the Deck of the U.S. Steamer Resaca" which also has two related articles on Sitka, Alaska. This is from shortly after the purchase of Alaska by the United States.
The front page shows: "The New State Capitol to be Erected at Albany, New York".

This issue is not fragile as newsprint back then was made of cotton and linen rags, allowing them to remain very pliable and easy to handle. Complete in 16 pages, minor irregularity along the spine, very nice condition.
