Background:On June 3–4, 1942, Japanese forces launched a sudden air attack on Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, in an effort to divert U.S. attention from the Midway operation and establish a northern foothold in the Pacific. The raid involved carrier-based and land-based aircraft striking the harbor, targeting the U.S. Army’s Fort Mears, Coast Guard facilities, and fuel and supply depots. Despite heavy bombing that damaged infrastructure, sank a few ships, and caused both military and civilian casualties, American defenses—including anti-aircraft guns and fighter aircraft—successfully repelled the attack and inflicted losses on the Japanese, downing several planes. The assault failed to secure a lasting Japanese advantage, but it marked the first and only direct Japanese air attack on U.S. soil in World War II, and it foreshadowed the subsequent occupation of nearby Aleutian islands Attu and Kiska, beginning a grueling campaign that would continue into 1943.
