An uncommon title from the Bay Area, just north of San Francisco. A typical newspaper of the day with a variety of local, regional, and national reports, plus a great wealth of advertisements, many of which are illustrated.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, news agent's stamp in the top margin, ragged at the right margin does not affect any type.

SALT LAKE DAILY HERALD, Salt Lake City, Utah, Dec. 25, 1886

This was still a Territorial newspaper as Utah would not become a state for another ten years.

HERALD EXPRESS--5th WAR EXTRA, Los Angeles, Dec. 25, 1941

The large headline announces: "SINK JAP SUB OFF CAL. COAST" and: "2nd Sub Bombed Near L.A." with various subheads. There was much paranoia early in WWII that California would be a focus of a Japanese attack, hence this headline which would likely only be found in a California newspaper.
The front leaf only, a little irregular along the left margin, nice for display as such.

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., Dec. 25, 1858  Page 3 has over half a column of detailed reporting headed: "The Slaves of the Echo", an infamous slave ship. It mentions in part: "...71 of the 271 in the ship took on board died...the negroes appeared generally a stupid and listless set of heathens...Most of them would lie from day to day like cattle upon the deck...They seemed bt bi nears destructive in their propensities..." and so much more. There are an additional 2 letters…

A very scarce and quite small single sheet "Supplement" issue, measuring just 9 by 10 3/4 inches. Beneath the masthead is: "A Merry Christmas To All!" Various news tidbits and an ad for a "Cow For Sale". A crude & old tape mend across the center causes no loss but does disfigure (see photos).
