THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER, Philadelphia, August 10, 1776

This was a decidedly Tory newspaper, supportive of the British efforts in America. This newspaper ended publication in June, 1778 when the British evacuated the city. This issue was printed less than a month after it printed the Declaration of Independence (July 13 issue).

THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET OR THE GENERAL ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, May 27, 1779  The front page begins with two detailed reward ads for deserted soldiers.

One-third of the front page and over one-third of page 2 are taken up with the: "Report of Commissioners for Settling a Cartel for the Exchange of prisoners" this being addressed: "To his Excellency GEORGE WASHINGTON, Esquire, General and Commander in Chief of all the Forces of the United States of America."

DEADWOOD DAILY PIONEER, Black Hills, (South Dakota) May 23, 1889  A rare publication from this famous, "old west" town. This city would arguably be--along with Tombstone & Dodge City--one of the more famous of all the towns from the rough & tumble days of the Old West, and only rarely do such issues come to light. THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., May 5, 1853  This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century: "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851. It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.

HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE, New York, April, 1880  An article titled: "La Villa Real de Santa Fe" has many illustrations of the Santa Fe, New Mexico, vicinity.

THE MONTEREY DEMOCRAT, Salinas City, Monterey County, California, Nov. 27, 1880  An early title from the county seat of Monterey County, just south of San Francisco. Very typical of newspapers from the era with a nice mix of news of the day and advertisements, some illustrated.
Gregory's 'Union List of American Newspapers' notes only 3 institutions have any holdings of this title.

Page three has a small but notable heading: "British Robot Test Fails", with subheading: "Rocket-Driven Plane Found to Travel Below Speed of Sound", and more. This describes one of the tests of the Miles M.52 project - a top‑secret, turbojet‑powered aircraft developed by the UK’s Ministry of Aviation with Miles Aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight.

THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, June 6, 1928  The ftpg. has a nice photo captioned "Amelia M. Earhart and Wilmer Stultz" and headed: "Gale Prevents Girl's Start on Sea Flight", with a related article.
After weather & other complications Earhart would fly the Atlantic on June 17 becoming the first woman to do so.
Complete in 30 pages, very nice condition for the era. Would be great for framing.

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, Dec. 19, 1772  The second page has the follow-up petition from the Freeholders of Boston expressing once again their concern about the salaries of the judges of the Superior Court, as well as a request for a special meeting of the General Assembly to discuss this important and alarming matter.
A reply from the Governor says their reasons are insufficient and they have not altered his opinion in the matter. He also denied their request for a special meeting.

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, Dec. 2, 1868. The front page features "Reynolds' Steam Condensing and Water Elevating Engine". Inside the issue are: "Selfridge's Patent Washing Machine"; "Gear's Variety Planing and Molding Machine"; "Hattan's Patent Fireplace"; "Dimock's Thermo-Annuciator"; and additional illustrations, articles and advertisements.

UNITED STATES CATHOLIC INTELLIGENCER, Boston, April 27, 1832  This rather rare title lasted for just one year, having begun in October, 1831 and ending in September, 1832. The issue is a "vol. III" issue as this publication was preceded by one titled "Jesuit, or Catholic Sentinel" and they kept the same volume numbering. It was also, curiously, superseded by the same title as well.
Its most striking feature is the very large & deep masthead, taking close to half of the front page, and which

THE ANTIGALLICAN MONITOR & ANTI-CORSICAN CHRONICLE, London, Oct. 20, 1811  Published by Lewis Goldsmith, of Portuguese-Jewish extraction. Previous to publishing this newspaper he spent much time in France acting as a "secret agent" to Napoleon, including efforts to kidnap King Louis XVIII. Goldsmith escaped to England in 1809 & by 1811 he founded this newspaper (subsequently known as the British Monitor, which advocated tyrannicide) through which he denounced the French Revolution.
