CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, Jan. 4, 1979

  • John Wayne Gacy in custody
  • Hunt for dead bodies in the area
  • Did he have an accomplice ?
  • Best title to be had ? - very rare

Here is nice issue on the discovery of John Wayne Gacy's crimes in a Chicago suburb. Page 6 has a heading: "Youth hints Gacy had an accomplice" with photo. (see images)
Gacy was arrested about 2 weeks earlier. Great to have this in a Chicago publication. I expect this to be an extremely rare item because there was really no reason to save it at the time.
Complete with all 112 pages, tabloid size, nice condition.

Background: This January 4, 1979 issue of the Chicago Sun-Times captures a pivotal moment in true-crime history, printed just two weeks after John Wayne Gacy’s arrest while investigators were actively excavating the crawl space beneath his Summerdale Avenue home. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporting duo Art Petacque and Hugh Hough, the headline story directly addresses one of the case's most enduring mysteries: whether Gacy acted alone or utilized teenage employees from his contracting company to lure and control victims. Because Gacy was ultimately tried and convicted as a lone killer, this report preserves a rare, real-time snapshot of early investigative leads and survivor testimonies that defense attorneys and cold-case researchers would continue to scrutinize for decades.
