Background: On June 19, 1947, U.S. Army Air Forces Colonel Albert Boyd reclaimed the official world airspeed record for the United States for the first time in nearly 24 years by piloting a heavily modified Lockheed P-80R Shooting Star to a speed of 623.753 mph (1,003.83 km/h) over Muroc Army Air Field, California. Designed specifically to beat the British-held record of 615.78 mph set by a Gloster Meteor, Boyd’s single-engine jet featured a sleek redesigned canopy, shortened wings with leading-edge modifications, and an upgraded water-injected Allison J33 turbojet engine to endure four scorching low-altitude passes over a measured four-mile course in 110°F heat.
