Background: On October 8, 1941, during the climax of Operation Typhoon—the central thrust of Germany’s overarching invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa)—the Battle of Moscow reached a devastating crisis as Wehrmacht Panzer groups completed massive double encirclements around Soviet forces at Vyazma and Bryansk, trapping over 600,000 Red Army soldiers across five field armies. Realizing the immediate threat to the capital, Joseph Stalin recalled General Georgy Zhukov from Leningrad on October 8 to take full command of Moscow's defense, while torrential autumnal rains began turning unpaved Soviet roads into thick mud (rasputitsa), stalling critical German logistics and granting Zhukov a vital, narrow window to consolidate fortified defense lines along the Mozhaisk position.
