Background: On February 7, 1943, Red Army forces captured the port city of Azov at the mouth of the Don River, sealing the eastern shoreline of the Sea of Azov and trapping tens of thousands of retreating Nazi and Axis forces against the coast. Following the capture of Yeysk on the Azov coast just a day prior, Soviet spearheads advanced rapidly along the Baku-Rostov railway, severing the last overland escape route to the north for over 100,000 Axis troops retreating from the Caucasus. This critical coastal block isolated German formations—including elements forced toward the Kerch Straits and the Kuban Peninsula—denying the Wehrmacht an organized land retreat, forcing hazardous, costly evacuations by sea, and guaranteeing the rapid collapse of Axis positions in the Don basin just days before Rostov’s final liberation.
