Background: On August 26, 1940, during the height of the Battle of Britain, the German Luftwaffe unleashed heavy aerial bombardments targeting RAF Fighter Command airfields—including RAF Hornchurch, Rochford, Kenley, and the heavily hit forward base at RAF Manston—as well as Thames Estuary shipping, where the merchant steamer Cape York was fatally damaged. The sky over Southeast England, particularly Kent and Dover—an area dubbed "Hell's Corner" by locals due to the relentless dogfights, falling shrapnel, and cross-Channel shelling—became a violent battleground as British squadrons (such as Nos. 54, 501, and 615) intercepted incoming Dornier Do 17 bombers and Messerschmitt Bf 109 escorts, resulting in heavy German aircraft losses (including seven out of nine low-level Dornier raiders downed in a single attack) and reinforcing the extreme strategic pressure on Fighter Command's infrastructure that led Winston Churchill to personally visit Dover's coastal defenses just two days later.
