1977 opening day premiere of "Star Wars" film advertisement...

Item # 729294 ·
LOS ANGELES TIMES (Sunday Calendar section only), May 29, 1977

* George Lucas' amazingly successful, original Star Wars
* Best opening day premiere - full page advertisement
* Epic space-opera movie - film - pop-culture phenomenon

Page 5 has a great and very rare opening day (weekend) premiere advertisement for the iconic film "STAR WARS" stating that it "Starts Wednesday", and perhaps no better issue could be found than this, the leading newspaper from the home of the entertainment industry - the Hollywood area's prime publication.

In addition to the featured movie ad, which captures the era's distinct theatrical promotional graphics and classic key art, the surrounding pages provide a fascinating snapshot of late 20th-century entertainment and pop culture. Printed on authentic newsprint with genuine vintage toning, this original leaf is not a modern reprint, making it an ideal piece for custom framing, film history display, or inclusion in a dedicated cinema memorabilia collection.

Complete Calendar section only with all 84 pages, tabloid size, very nice condition.

This is a rare surviving item from of the 1970s - a weekly newspaper that held no obvious historic value at the time, giving no one a reason to save it.

Own a rare slice of cinema history straight from the home of the entertainment industry

Background: The May 29, 1977, Los Angeles Times "Calendar" section featuring a full-page advertisement reading "Starts Wednesday, May 25" is a authentic artifact of opening-week movie marketing. This seemingly delayed phrasing stems from print newspaper deadlines of the era, as heavy Sunday entertainment inserts like the "Calendar" supplement required multi-day advance press runs, freezing ad copy before the film's midweek launch. To maximize coverage for the crucial Memorial Day holiday weekend, 20th Century Fox purchased major Sunday ad buys using their uniform nationwide display artwork designed around the nationwide premiere date. Because Star Wars initially debuted in only a few dozen theaters nationwide—including iconic Los Angeles venues like Mann's Chinese Theatre and the Avco Center in Westwood—this full-page push served as a main driver for word-of-mouth promotion during the film's historic first weekend, making intact copies of the L.A. opening-week paper a prized collector's item today.
