Background: Directed by Alvin Rakoff, the 1980 Canadian-British supernatural horror film Death Ship centers on a small group of luxury cruise line survivors—led by incoming Captain Trevor Marshall (Richard Crenna) and a severely injured outgoing Captain Ashland (George Kennedy)—who are forced to board an eerie, black iron vessel after it inexplicably rams and sinks their ocean liner. The narrative gains its distinct, eerie weight as the survivors discover that the ghost ship is a sentient, former WWII Kriegsmarine interrogation vessel fueled by supernatural energy and the blood of its past victims; the ship psychologically possesses Ashland, driving him to don a Nazi uniform and stalk his fellow survivors. The film’s most memorable and gruesome sequences highlight this sinister atmosphere, featuring lockers crammed with frozen corpses, movie projectors autonomously looping wartime propaganda, a infamous shower that runs with warm human blood, and a mechanical crewless ship that actively hunts down nautical prey to feed its immortal, malicious spirit.
