Having just served in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll—where it was flown remotely into radioactive atomic bomb mushroom clouds to gather vital data—this aircraft demonstrated the unprecedented power of long-range, radio-controlled technology by successfully opening its bomb bay doors mid-flight over the Pacific to release a smoke bomb before safely landing via remote command from a accompanying "mother ship." Setting a world record for the longest uncrewed flight of its era, this landmark event proved the viability of long-distance radio-controlled autonomous guidance and air-drop capabilities, serving as a critical operational bridge between World War II bomber tactics and the modern era of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and remotely piloted military systems.
