Background:On March 26, 1919, a group of leaders from the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society—commonly associated with the Russellites, an early term for what would become Jehovah’s Witnesses—were released from federal prison. These eight men, including then-president Joseph F. Rutherford, had been imprisoned in 1918 under the Espionage Act for their opposition to World War I, particularly due to content published in the book The Finished Mystery. The release came after an appeals court found that they had been wrongly convicted, and their case was ultimately dropped. This event marked a major turning point for the organization, helping to galvanize its followers and leading to a reorganization of leadership and growth in the postwar years.
