·
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Dec. 9, 1812
* USS United States vs. HMS Macedonian
* USS Wasp vs. HMS Frolic
The middle of the front page has a nice letter under: "Naval Chronicle" headed: "Official Letter from Capt. Jones of the Wasp sloop, to the Secretary of the Navy" which is official account of the naval battle which resulted in the capture of the British ship Frolic. The report is signed: Jas. Jones.
The top of page 2 has: "Our Country's Naval Glory" "capture of Another First Class English Frigate" which is a nice account of the capture of the Macedonian by Stephen Decatur & his frigate United States.
Four pages, archivally strengthened at the spine, good condition.
Background: The dual naval victories detailed in this issue of the Columbian Centinel carried profound psychological and geopolitical significance for the young United States, shattering the contemporary myth of British naval invincibility. Prior to the War of 1812, the Royal Navy was the undisputed tyrant of the seas, having decisively crushed the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar; consequently, domestic expectations for the microscopic American Navy were grim. By defeating the Frolic and captured the Macedonian in back-to-back single-ship duels, commanders like Jacob Jones and Stephen Decatur provided a massive surge of national pride and unity to a country otherwise bitterly divided over the war. Furthermore, forcing the Macedonian to surrender and sailing her back to American ports as a prize of war was a humiliating strategic blow to British prestige, forcing Great Britain to alter its naval doctrine, tighten its Atlantic blockade, and acknowledge the United States as a legitimate and formidable maritime power.
