THE STAR, London, England, Sept. 27, 1814  Page 3 has wonderful reporting on this historic capture of Washington, D.C. by the British during the War of 1812.
The top of a column notes: "CAPTURE and DESTRUCTION OF WASHINGTON" with the report beginning: "Our readers might perceive, from the observations offered yesterday, on the military operations in America, that we expected soon to announce THE CAPTURE OF WASHINGTON. That important event has actually been accomplished, and the reign of Madison, like that of Bonaparte, may be considered as at an end. That vile impostor has been the cause of at least as many evils to the Americans as to us..." with much more.
Further on is a heading: "Letters To The Lord Mayor" noting: "...I have the satisfaction to acquaint your Lordship, that Captain Wainwright...arrived...with dispatches...announcing the capture and destruction, by his Majesty's forces, of the city of Washington...after a severe but a decisive action, at Bladensburgh, in advance of Washington, in which a very superior number of the enemy were driven...and totally routed..." with much more on this.
Yet another: "Bulletin" mentions in part: "...dispatches from Vice-Admiral...Cochrane, Commander in Chief on the American station, with an account of the CAPTURE and DESTRUCTION By his Majesty's forces of the CITY of WASHINGTON, on the 24th ultimo, after a severe but brilliant action in which the enemy was defeated with great loss...".
