background: On April 28, 1945, the collapse of the Third Reich reached a fever pitch when Adolf Hitler discovered through a Reuters news report that Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, had secretly attempted to negotiate a separate surrender with the Western Allies. Operating through Count Folke Bernadotte of the Swedish Red Cross, Himmler delusionaly believed he could broker a peace that would allow Germany to continue its war against the Soviet Union while he assumed leadership of a post-Hitler government. When the news reached the Führer’s bunker in Berlin, it triggered a "volcanic rage" in Hitler, who viewed this move by "der treue Heinrich" (the loyal Heinrich) as the ultimate betrayal. In immediate retaliation, Hitler ordered the execution of Himmler's liaison in the bunker, Hermann Fegelein, stripped Himmler of all titles, and expelled him from the Nazi Party in his final political testament. The Western Allies, however, stayed true to their pact with Stalin and flatly rejected the offer, insisting on nothing less than unconditional surrender on all fronts, effectively sealing the fate of the remaining Nazi leadership.
