Background: Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s official June 28, 1942 After-Action Report framed the Battle of Midway as the decisive turning point in the Pacific War, crediting Station HYPO’s codebreakers for anticipating Japan's ambush at Midway and enabling U.S. forces to destroy all four enemy fleet carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū), the heavy cruiser Mikuma, and over 240 aircraft alongside irreplaceable veteran pilots. While commemorating the pivotal sacrifices of unescorted torpedo squadrons like VT-8 and VT-6—whose low-level attacks drew down Japanese Zero fighters and cleared the skies for SBD Dauntless dive-bombers to strike—the report also detailed American casualties, including 145 aircraft, the destroyer USS Hammann, and the carrier USS Yorktown, whose crew's extraordinary damage-control efforts were highlighted alongside urgent tactical calls to overhaul carrier fighter defense and strike group coordination.
