Front page report of the Roswell UFO crash...

Item # 716989 ·

NEW YORK TIMES, July 9, 1947  The top of the front page has a two column head: "'Disk' Near Bomb Test Site Is Just a Weather Balloon" and a subhead: "But Until a Lowly Warrant Officer Tells Real Story Superiors Up to Generals Flounder for an Explanation".
The first paragraph begins: "Celestial crockery had the Army up in the air for several hours yesterday before an Army officer explained that what a colleague though was "a flying disk" was nothing more than a battered Army weather balloon..." with much more, including: "...none of the previous...reports of strange heavenly bodies created as much confusion as the starling announcement from an Army lieutenant that 'a flying disk' had been found on a ranch near Roswell, N.M..".
The article carries over to page 10.
This report remains to this day a very controversial event, and a subculture of UFO-related shops, restaurants, etc. is well embedded in Roswell.
Complete in 48 pages, reglued at the spine, close-trimmed at the bottom of the front leaf only, not remotely close to the Roswell report.
