THE PROTESTANT (DOMESTICK) INTELLIGENCE, Or News both from CITY AND COUNTRY, London, England, April 2, 1680

  • Very rare 17th century publication
  • By America's first publisher (Benjamin Harris)

Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a newspaper by Benjamin Harris. Harris was the first newspaper publisher in the colonies, having published "Public Occurrences Both Forreign & Domestick" in Boston in 1690. It lasted for only one issue, and to this day only one issue of that newspaper has been found.
Before emigrating to the colonies, he published this newspaper in London, but he was eventually put in jail and upon release, headed for the colonies.
A fine opportunity for a Harris imprint (his name appears at the bottom of the back page).
A single sheet issue, 6 3/4 by 11 inches, very nice condition.

Background: Dated April 2, 1680, this rare single-sheet issue of The Protestant (Domestick) Intelligence serves as a tangible artifact of 17th-century English print culture and political turmoil, published by Benjamin Harris—who would later earn renown as the publisher of America's first, albeit short-lived, colonial newspaper, Public Occurrences Both Forreign & Domestick. Captured during a volatile era marked by intense anti-Catholic sentiment and fierce struggles over government censorship in London, this particular edition features Harris’s authentic publisher's imprint proudly displayed at the bottom of the back page. Presented on a preserved 6 3/4 by 11-inch sheet, the publication provides contemporary domestic and civic news from both city and country that directly reflects the turbulent socio-political climate leading up to the Glorious Revolution, which ultimately drove Harris to face imprisonment and subsequent emigration to the American colonies.
