Note: On July 29, 1924, the sentencing trial of Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb began in Chicago after they pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks. The two wealthy University of Chicago students had committed the crime as an intellectual exercise, believing they could execute the "perfect crime." Their defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, chose to forgo a jury trial to avoid the death penalty, instead arguing before Judge John Caverly for life imprisonment. The case drew national attention due to its shocking nature and Darrow’s powerful anti-death penalty arguments. Ultimately, both men were sentenced to life in prison for murder plus 99 years for kidnapping.
