Item # 715534
January 05, 1778
THE NEW YORK GAZETTE AND THE WEEKLY MERCURY, Jan. 5, 1778  The masthead features a very nice coat-of-arms engraving.
Almost the entire front page is taken up with various Proclamations and Declarations, the first being one by: "Sir Henry Clinton" which is a "Proclamation" followed by: "A Proclamation, By Major General James Robertson", then a "Declaration" by W. Howe, plus more.
Page 2 has some great war-related content including a 1 1/2 column letter signed by: J. Burgoyne, dated at the "camp nearly opposite to Saratoga, Aug. 20" in which he details the work of his army thru August 15, all encouraging reports. Note that Burgoyne would surrender to General Gates on October 17, a major American victory that would cause the French to come to America's aid.
Also included is a letter from Lt. Col. St. Leger to General Burgoyne from Fort Stanwix, August 11, 1777, then a letter from General A. Maclean to Guy Carleton from Ticonderoga, Sept. 30, 1777, plus more.
Included as well are two letters signed by B. Franklin and S. Deane, concerning an exchange of prisoners.
Four pages, 3 untrimmed margins, very nice condition.
