End of World War II, in a military newspaper...

Item # 714147 ·

:THE BULLSHEET, Depot 0-656, August 16, (1945)

  • Japanese surrender ending World War II

This is a military "camp newspaper", very common during the war with each installation creating their own, small newspaper. We are not aware of where depot 0-656 was.
This issue is on the end of the war, with the banner headline above the masthead: "JAPS KAPUT--BOW TO ALLIES" and beneath the masthead: "V-J Day Brings World Peace" with related articles.
Four pages, 10 1/2 by 14 1/2 inches, nice condition.

Background: This issue of The Bullsheet—published on August 16, 1945, at European Quartermaster Depot O-656 in Grantham, England—captures the immediate, unfiltered euphoria of World War II's end through bold front-page declarations including "JAPS KAPUT--BOW TO ALLIES" and "V-J Day Brings World Peace." Printed just two days after President Truman announced Japan's surrender, the four-page tabloid newsletter offers a rare and localized look at how Allied service members abroad experienced the final collapse of the Axis powers. Because local camp newspapers had tiny print runs and were typically read and discarded in the field, surviving V-J Day editions like this serve as prized primary-source artifacts that bridge major global history with the authentic voice of everyday wartime G.I.s.
