A rare find with original wrappers... Death of Haym Salomon...

Item # 711664 ·

THE BOSTON MAGAZINE, January, 1785  Eighteenth century American magazines are increasingly difficult to find, and this has been a very elusive title for us. Plus, the bonus with this issue is having the original front and back wrappers, the front wrapper
having an engraving of Boston.
Content is typical of most 18th century magazines, while news of the day was relegated to the back pages. Included is: "By the United States in Congress, Assembled, December 20, 1784. On motion, Resolved, that it is expedient the Congress proceed to take measures for procuring suitable buildings to be erected for their accommodation..." with much more on this.
Also near the back is: "An Obituary, for Jan. 1785. Died, At Philadelphia Hayms Salomon, Broker to the Office of Finance, native of Poland, and of the Hebrew nation.".
Haym Salomon was American merchant best known for his actions during the Revolutionary War, where he was the prime financier to the Continental Congress. Salomon studied finance in Western Europe before emigrating to New York City in 1775. After the American Revolutionary War broke out in the same year, Salomon supported the patriots by providing financial services while working alongside Robert Morris, the Superintendent of Finance of the United States. He was one of the more famous Jews of the 18th century.
Complete in 40 pages plus the wrappers, and plus a portion of the continuing history of the "County of Suffolk" at the back. Original string bindings, never-trimmed margins, wear at the wrapper margins, 5 3/4 by 8 3/4 inches.
