THE SAN BENITO ADVANCE, Hollister, California,  Aug. 16, 1895  This city of 41,000 is in the Monterey Bay area. The town wasn't founded until 1868 by William W. Hollister on the grounds of the former Mexican land-grant Rancho San Justo. At the time, Hollister was within Monterey County but since then San Benito County was carved from it.
