THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, June 28, 1683 The back page has a bit concerning Richard Rumbold, who was executed for involvement in the Rye House Plot two years later.
But he has a notable American connection. His scaffold speech included the statement: "... none comes into the world with a saddle on his back, neither any booted and spurred to ride him...". These words were quoted during the discussions on the definition of treason at the American Constitutional Convention in 1787, and also by Thomas Jefferson shortly before his death in 1826.
Complete as a single sheet issue, 6 1/2 by 11 inches, great condition.
