HARPER'S MONTHLY, New York, October, 1873  Inside has a fourteen page article about the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Has a total of eleven illustrations of the buildings and activities at the Institute, plus a nice print (see photos) of the Ball Club that measures about 2 3/4 by 3 inches. The Institute, founded as a co-educational school for negroes shortly after the Civil War, is now known as Hampton University. Early and uncommon for Negro Baseball.
Also in the issue is "In a Tobacco Factory" which ten illustrations. Additional articles, illustrations and poems within.
Quarto-size, 160 pgs., several tiny binding holes along the left spine, otherwise in good condition.
