Nice on the Staunton-Morphy chess controversy...

Item # 695633 ·

SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, Nov. 6, 1857  It is subtitled in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Agriculture, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage".
Inside has a report concerning the Staunton-Morphy Controversy in which Staunton seems to have purposely ducked a challenge by Morphy to a chess match. Websites online provide much detail. Included here are two letters signed by Paul Morphy, headed: "The Match Between Mr. Morphy and Mr. Staunton".
Morphy was commonly acknowledged as the greatest chess master of his era.
