Uncle Tom's Cabin... Spirit rapping in Kentucky...

Item # 691667 ·

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., Aug. 12, 1852  Page 3 has a detailed ad headed: "Uncle Tom's Cabin--80,000 copies in 16 weeks! a sale unprecedented in the history of bookselling in America..." with more on it (see).

Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S., and is said to have helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War.
In the U. S., Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel and the second best-selling book of the 19th century, following the Bible.
Page 3 also has: "The spirit-rappers have appeared in Scott county, Kentucky...attended the manifestations of the spirits...wishes to investigate the matter further...The mediums were a girl 12 years of age, daughter of the gentleman at whose house the trappings took place, and two bare-footed negroes."
