THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, May, 1731 This is just the fifth issue of this extremely successful magazine, having begun in January of 1731 and lasting until 1907. As noted on the title page this is the "Second Edition". First editions from this initial year are very difficult to find.
Most of the issue is taken up with: "A View of the Weekly Disputes & Essays in this Month" taken from the various newspapers of the day, including The Craftsman, the Universal Spectator, Fog's Journal, Grub Street Journal, the Free Briton, the London Journal, and more.
Near the back is the "Monthly Intelligencer" which has the latest news reports of the day and which includes "Plantation Affairs" which includes a report from New England as well, and also the: "Substance of the first Speech of Robert Johnson, Governor of S. Carolina, to the council & Assembly..." which has various information on what is happening in the colony.
There were no plates or maps in such early issues of this magazine.
Complete in 44 pages, 5 by 8 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice condition.
