NEW YORK TRIBUNE, April 28, 1860  Among column heads on page 7 are: "Anxiety Of Slaveholder" "They Will Spread Their Institution" "Northern Democrats Hopeless" "They Can't Go So Much Slavery" and more.
But certainly the most fascinating article is headed: "The Negro Market In Savannah" which offers an unusual, detailed account of a slave auction, how it is conducted, the slaves examined, & their reaction to being sold. A few bits include: "...A rather old negro was first sold...very closely examined by a large number of people who looked to the condition of his joints & at his hands & teeth...was compelled to laugh once at hearing two negro boys quarreling as to which of their masters could flog best..." and much more.
This report has considerably more detail than is typically found in a period newspaper.
Also on page 7 is: "Fugitive Slave Case In Troy--Great Excitement--The Man Rescued Twice". This is the case of fugitive slave Charles Nalle, about whom more information can be found on the hyperlink.
