December 13, 1861
WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, Dec. 13, 1861
* Rare Confederate title
This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
Nice content in this issue, as the ftpg. has: "England and the Yankees" which takes an entire column. Also: "An Incident" is a fascinating story of coincidence--must be read (see photos). Also: "English Feeling on American Affairs" "The People of St. Louis for the South". Pg. 2 has: "Lincoln's Message & the Northern Congress" "A Gallant Officer" "From the 21st Regiment" "North Carolina Conference" "A Provisional Government Formed for North Carolina by the Yankees" "Northern News--The Message of Lincoln" and pg. 3 includes: "War News--Another Victory in :Missouri" "McClellan in Favor of Exchanging Prisoners" "General Bragg to his Army" "An Important Capture" "The Pay of the Soldiers" & more. The bkpg. is entirely taken up with ads. Complete in 4 pages, scattered foxing throughout, generally in nice condition. A clean archival mend to the backpg. Measures about 11 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches.
An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title, but one with extensive war content.
