THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 23, 1873 The front page has more than a full column taken up with the first train robbery by Jesse James and the James Gang, although the men were not identified at the time of this report. The top of the ftpg. has: "DARING RAILWAY ROBBERY " "Western Bandits At Work" "A Train thrown From the Track--The Engineer Killed--The Express Car Robbed by Armed Guerrillas" with the text beginning: "The express train on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad bound east...was thrown from the track...attacked & robbed & the engineer killed...". Further on is: "The robbers, who were all but one masked, had removed the plates connecting one rail...At once two of the scoundrels, one unmasked, attacked the express car...took from the safe nearly $1700 and one sealed bag of Wells Fargo & Co.'s amount not known. Pistols were also held at the head of the registry clerk..." with other details (see). The subhead reads: "Latest In Regard to the Robbers--Inquest on the Body of Rafferty".
