March 15, 1797
THE HERALD; A GAZETTE FOR THE COUNTRY, New York, March 15, 1797

* President George Washington
* William Lee (Billy) personal slave

Pages 2 and 3 contain a letter signed in type by: Go. Washington, concerning a series of forged letters with his signature implying that his personal man servant, Billy, had been captured at Fort Lee in 1776. Washington refutes this ever happened (see).
Rarely have we found period newspapers with any reference to any of Washington's slaves, Billy perhaps being the most noted as he was the only one of the 124 owned by Washington freed outright by his will.
Also of significance is the report of Washington returning to Mount Vernon following the inauguration of his successor, John Adams. Today much press is given to the helicopter ride of the outgoing President from the White House lawn. In 1797 it happened this way: "The late President, on his journey to Mount Vernon, is escorted by different military corps, and by private gentlemen, who every where pay him the utmost attention and respect." (see).
Four pages, minor toning near the top, very nice condition.
