February 17, 1863
RICHMOND SEMI-WEEKLY EXAMINER, Virginia, February 17, 1863

* Slavery during the Civil War
* From the Confederate capital

Not only is this a nice Confederate newspaper, but it is from the capital of the Confederacy. I don't believe I've ever seen this "Semi-Weekly" edition of this title before.
Among the front page war reports are: "Reported Retirement of the Yankee Army Towards the Potomac" "Latest News From The North" which has many subheads including: "The Alabama" "The Currency Bill" "Movements of the Florida and Alabama" "Political Movements in the Northwest" "M. Mercier's Visit to Richmond" and more. Also on the front page: "Additional From The North" "Special Correspondence of The London Times" "Telegraphic News--Important If True" with subhead: "Grand Programme For Terminating the War, and Forming a Northwest Confederacy" "The Revolution In The West" and other items as well.
The back page is mostly taken up with some interesting editorial comment concerning the war, particularly concerning slaves in the war effort, portions including: "...organized several of these black regiments in the island of Jamaica, drilled them...clad them in gaudy uniforms & armed them with musket & bayonets. The negroes liked the amusement amazingly for a while & delighted the officers engaged in the task of converting them into soldiers...but when they embarked...against New Orleans...the negroes fell into deep dejection...The black troops behaved in the most shameful manner to a man...The malignity of the Yankees has led them into what will prove a fatal blunder. The negro cannot make a soldier..." with much more. The photos show only portions as the article is very lengthy.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, typical for Confederate newspapers, and in excellent condition. There is just one tiny hole which is caused by paper thinness, not wear.
